Following Sen. Shoebridge's presentation, there will be a brief discussion of U.S. and Colorado election results and the path forward.

Colorado Legislature – Gun Bills

First bill to be heard this Wednesday

SB16-017  Permitless Concealed Carry
Sponsors:  Sen. Tim Neville and Rep. Patrick Neville (the RMGO father/son duo)
Would allow anyone eligible to legally purchase a handgun to be able to carry it concealed in Colorado, just as if the person had a CCW permit.

Senate State, Veterans, and Military Affairs Committee
Wednesday, January 27, 2016    1:30 p.m.   Room:  SCR 356

Join us in testifying against this bill or being present in opposition.  Ceasefire Strongly Opposes this bill.

Arguments Against the bill:

Depends upon self-analysis of eligibility, and therefore

  • Removes requirement for a background check.
  • Removes sheriff discretion.
  • Eliminates training class.
  • Would increase the number of people carrying hidden handguns in public.

Unfortunately, more guns = more gun deaths.

Please contact senators on the committee to express your opposition to the bill:
Ray Scott (R, Chair)  303-866-3077  ray.scott.senate@state.co.us
Jerry Sonnenberg (R, Vice-Chair) 303-866-6360  senatorsonnenberg@gmail.com
Owen Hill (R) 303-866-2737  owen.hill.senate@state.co.us
Matt Jones (D) 303-866-5291  senatormattjones@gmail.com
Jessie Ulibarri (D) 303-866-4857jessie.ulibarri.senate@state.co.us

Other gun bills:  Not yet scheduled for a hearing.

HB16-1023   Stand Your Ground (business)  – Strongly oppose Status: Introduced 1/13/16.  Assigned to House State, Veterans and Military Affairs (Rep. Justin Everett) Would allow a person to use deadly force against an intruder in a business location if they felt threatened, no matter how slight. This is a Stand Your Ground bill.  Think of the shooting death of Trayvon Martin in Florida and you’ve got the idea.  This is the 11th straight year this bill has been considered.

HB16-1024  Repeal the Ban on High Capacity Magazines – Strongly oppose
Status: Introduced 1/1/16.  Assigned to House State, Veterans and Military Affairs.  (Reps. Lori Saine and Stephen Humphrey and Sen. Vicki Marble)  Would remove the ban on the sale and transfer of ammunition magazines over 15 rounds, which became law in 2013.  This is the 3rd straight year this bill will be considered.

Senator Morse to Speak at CFCU meeting this Thursday.

CFCU has invited all interested persons, including Ceasefire members, to attend.
Please join us at the 2016 kickoff general meeting of Colorado Faith Communities United to End Gun Violence  http://cfcu-co.org/:
Thursday, Jan. 28, at 7:00 PM - 9:00
First Plymouth Congregational Church, 3501 S. Colorado Blvd.
(Southwest corner of South Colorado and Hampden)

With 2016 an important election year and the Colorado State Legislature just now back in session, our keynote speaker will be John Morse, the former Colorado State Senate President who helped steer much of the gun safety legislation in 2013 and was later subject to a recall election for his work on the issue.  Mr. Morse was present when President Obama  recently announced his executive orders on gun safety and brings an insider's perspective to the legislative landscape locally and across the country.

Following John's expert insights and advice about the political climate for moving our gun safety work forward in 2016, the meeting will also provide an overview of current legislative/advocacy issues and actions you can take to help reduce gun deaths and injuries in Colorado and the nation.   Please distribute this invitation to other gun safety advocates so we can learn together and leverage the growing momentum for promoting gun safety policies in our state and country.

Guardian reporter gets kicked out the Shot Show

A Guardian reporter at the Shot Show asked whether Smith and Wesson’s AR15 was the type of gun used in the San Bernardino shooting (it was). He and his photographer were promptly ejected from the show. https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=1264293813597683&id=456740217686384

End gun industry immunity

Gun manufacturers and dealers are the only industry in America that is protected from lawsuits when its products lead to violence and death.    In 2003, Colorado enacted a law granting broad immunity to this industry, and in 2005 a federal law (PLCAA: Protection of Lawful commerce in Arms Act) was enacted doing much the same.

Sandy and Lonnie Phillips, parents of Jessica Ghawi, who was shot and killed in the Aurora Theater, filed a suit against Lucky Gunner, the company that provided the ammunition to the shooter.  The suit was thrown out, and the judge ordered that the Phillips pay $203,000 to Lucky Gunner for the company’s attorney fees.   Please read and sign onto Sandy and Lonnie’s letter to Congress requesting reversal of this law.   Do as soon as possiblehttps://docs.google.com/forms/d/1J3SvXF-_iE0rcrZ8rDfPeG-9BZOiqHCYD5bXDirr4DI/viewform

Boulder Daily Camera Op-Ed about DMNS

The Boulder Daily Camera on Friday published an op-ed about the Denver Museum of Nature and Science’s decision to allow CCW permit holders to bring their guns into the facility.  Ceasefiire strongly disagrees with this decision.  At this time, clarification is still being sought as to whether the museum is a private employer.  If it is, then the museum does not have to do this.  It sure seems like it is a private employer.  Their employees are not paid by the city, county, or state.

If you live in Denver, please contact your city council member to ask them to request the city attorney clarify whether the DMNS is a private employer, tenant or business.   Council members contact information:  https://www.denvergov.org/content/denvergov/en/denver-city-council/council-members.html ; Find your councilor:  https://www.denvergov.org/maps/map/councildistricts
Council members Stacie Gilmore and Robin Kneich are both at-large, so all Denver residents should call them also.

Colorado Ceasefire

Call Representative Joe Salazar as soon as possible and urge him to:

1) Vote against the repeal of the current high capacity magazine ban.

2) Oppose any effort to change the limit to 30-rounds, rather than the current 15-round limit.

Joe Salazar:  303-866-2918.

                     cell:  303-895-7044

                     joseph.salazar.house@state.co.us

It has been reported that on Colorado's Inside Out (Channel 12) , a representative from the libertarian Independence Institute commended Representative Salazar for his willingness to discuss expanding the magazine limit to 30 bullets.

Expanding the magazine limit to 30-rounds is virtually the same as no high capacity magazine ban at all.

The magazines used in Newtown massacre were 30-round magazines.

The vote is Monday afternoon.

CALL NOW!!!!!!   CALL NOW!!!!!   CALL NOW!!!  CALL NOW!!!
